A NEW baby SUV is on the way from Ford which has revealed its latest EcoSport - available for the first time as a proper 4x4.

The new EcoSport, due for release later this year, will also mark the debut of Ford's new 1.5-litre diesel EcoBlue diesel engine.

Developing 125ps and with a six-speed manual gearbox it gives the new EcoSport 4x4 a claimed fuel return of 63mpg with CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

Restyled to create more rugged looks, the new EcoSport is now in the same vein as Ford's larger Kuga and Edge SUVs.

Based on the Fiesta, the new model will be built in Romania and will also be available with sporty ST-Line trim

That includes body extras such as pronounced side skirts while the inside gets a flat-bottomed steering wheel and part leather upholstery.

Other equipment being added to the EcoSport includes a rear-view camera, cruise control and blind spot monitors.

The car will sit on either 17 or 18-inch alloys.

Petrol engines in the new EcoSport feature Ford's award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine in three states of tune with power outputs of 100, 125 and 140ps.

The 125ps engine will be available with the option of an automatic box.

Ford will also be fitting its 100ps 1.5-litre diesel in front-wheel drive versions while next year the new diesel engine will be available with a similar powertrain.

Boot capacity is increased marginally to 334 litres.

Although prices have still to be revealed, the new EcoSport is likely to start from around £16,000 and is due for release later this year.

Other equipment included on the new model sees a 4.2-inch display screen in the instrument panel, Ford's SYNC 3 connectivity system and a B&O Play sound system.
