SMART could be about to enter the booming SUV market if its latest concept model comes to fruition.
The Concept #5 is being unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show and is an all-electric mid-size SUV with all-wheel drive and AI assisted technology as well as two OLED display screens and a ‘zero-gravity' front passenger seat that comes with a combination of comfort and safety, integrating features like heating, ventilation, massage functions and a leg rest.
The vehicle features a drive system with 800-volt technology and a battery with a nominal capacity of 100+ kWh which allows for super-fast charging, with the ability to regain up to 70 per cent state of charge in just 15 minutes.
The concept has a range of more than 341 miles as well as five driving modes for differing road conditions and a number of driver assist features.
Dirk Adelmann, CEO of Smart Europe, said: "For more than a quarter of a century, Smart has made a significant impact by pioneering models and mobility solutions for the urban space and beyond.
"The Smart Concept #5 is the most unexpected and versatile car that our brand has ever created. With this vehicle, we leave all boundaries behind and open up a new segment for customers in Europe and worldwide."
With a boxy silhouette the concept model has protective front and rear skid plates with a hidden integrated winch and folding rear step for roof access, in combination with an illuminating roof light bar.
