Skoda Octavia 1.6
TDI Greenline
THE potential to comfortably return an average 75 miles per gallon from a family-size car is something not to be sniffed at in these days of rip-off prices at the pumps.
But then that's the benefit of car companies having a range of super frugal eco models in their line-up. Better still if these green machines aren't stripped to the bare bones.
In Skoda's case the eco warriors are badged Greenline, a technology launched three years ago and now into its second generation.
All five models in the Czech manufacturer's stable - Fabia, Octavia, Yeti, Roomster and Superb - boast Greenline versions featuring fuel-saving devices.
That means diesel engines fitted with Stop/Start systems, improved aerodynamics, low rolling resistance tyres, lowered ride height to improve airflow and revised weight distribution.
The Octavia Greenline - the most fuel efficient Octavia ever made - is aimed at offering both families and fleets a more economical way to munch the miles.
It is powered by a 1.6-litre TDI diesel engine producing 105ps and with just 99g/km of emissions it is exempt from road tax and congestion charging.
And unlike some rivals, the Greenline hasn't pulled the plug on creature comforts. It is based on the SE grade - one above entry level - and includes the likes of air-con, cruise control, four-spoke leather steering wheel and trip computer.
While the Octavia may not be at the sharp end of cutting edge design it is nonetheless Skoda's most successful ever car.
That's understandable, given the car's practicality and value for money. Designed with everyday life in mind there's space for five, plenty of cabin storage areas, a Bolero entertainment system with touch screen display, ABS with electronic stability control, gearshift prompts and a massive boot.
On the down side some of the interior fittings are a bit plasticky and the centre rear passenger is both perched and forced to stretch legs either side of the transmission tunnel.
But the Octavia is a decent car to drive through its five-speed manual gearbox with adequate acceleration and the punch to make it both a comfortable motorway cruiser and suburban runaround.
Going Greenline costs slightly more than a standard diesel with the same trim - in the Octavia's case £465 - but with its cleaner operation and official average economy of an extra 11.5mpg, it makes sound sense.
