GREEN NCAP, the organisation which monitors a vehicle's real world fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness, has released results on six new models.
Under a new test protocol it examined the Audi Q4 e-tron, the 48-volt Hyundai Bayon, the Renault Kangoo TCe 130, the VW Caddy 1.5 TSI, the 1.2-litre PureTech Peugeot 308 and the Genesis GV70 which is powered by a 2.5-litre petrol engine.
In the tests the Audi scored five stars for the all-electric Sportback model, with the Hyundai, Renault and VW vehicles rated at 2.5 stars.
The Peugeot received two stars while the Genesis achieved only one.
Green NCAP technical manager Aleksandar Damyanov said: "Until today our assessments covered tank-to-wheel evaluation only.
"Cars obtained a star rating based on their emissions and efficiency performance from charging point or fuel pump to performance they delivered on the road. Green NCAP's new rating covers a Well-to-Wheel plus greenhouse gas assessment, signifying a much broader approach."
The organisation said of the Audi that it scored well in all three parts of the assessment - clean air, energy efficiency and greenhouse gases - as it is a fully electric vehicle with zero emissions at the tailpipe and a high efficiency powertrain. The Q4 only lost a fraction of points in the cold ambient and highway tests.
The VW Caddy scored a creditable 2.5 stars, but its clean air index would have been higher if the ammonia emissions were controlled better.
The Renault Kangoo, on the other hand, controlled all pollutants well but lost points due to its higher energy consumption and related greenhouse gas output.
The powerful GV70 luxury SUV from Genesis did not score well due to its significant fuel demand, while it also failed to impress with adequate pollutants control, which eventually left it with just one green star.
